COVID-19 has taken its toll on the U.S. economy. Every industry has been impacted by this unforeseen pandemic, leaving more than 2 million Americans unemployed. Some college students, who had already accepted job and internship offers, have had their offers rescinded. In crises like this, we need more people like Yasmin Salina and her team at The Hustlers Guild who are helping high school and college students build professional connections, network, and secure internships and jobs within the entertainment industry.

Though immersive training labs, The Hustlers Guild provides Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) service-learning development to middle and high-school students in D.C. Public Schools (DCPS). A culturally-responsive model that fuses STEAM learning with hip-hop culture, the program is designed to develop vital academic, technical and social-emotional skills that will allow students to succeed in the tech space. The weekly sessions are led by Black volunteers and industry-leading professionals, whose insight, access and resources are paramount to creating Black and brown pipelines to tech careers.

Roosevelt STAY High School Paticipate In Pitch Competition

The Hustlers Guild’s 2019 cohort from Roosevelt STAY High School participated in a pitch competition geared towards assisting youth to become better advocates and public speakers. The winners of the competition won an all expense paid trip to New York City to meet with record executives and influencers in the hip-hop industry.

 

The cohort worked in teams designing creative solutions to addressing systemic issues in their community, schools, and homes. Additionally, students worked collaboratively, collected and analyzed data, conducted research, and pitched their solutions to each other and members of the school community. This year's cohort presentations included pitches to enhance school curriculum through financial literacy courses as well as increasing student engagement through community building.

 

Students got the opportunity to present their ideas to school leadership as well as their U.S. Representative, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's office (D-DC).

Mayor Bowser Recognizes The Hustlers Guild for Their Ongoing Neighborhood Cleanup Events

Mayor Bowser recognized 12 community organizations for their ongoing neighborhood cleanup events. The organizations included: Georgia Avenue Thrive, the Lamond Community Action Group, the Fort Lincoln Civic Association, the Carver Family Community Fellowship, EJ Valentine, Shabbycat, The Hustlers Guild, 3-T and Friends Pet Services, Atlas Vet, GKR TrashFree Association, Friends of Kingman Park, and 24th Street Caring Neighbors.

Graduating seniors at Maya Angelou Public Charter School can now apply for an exclusive STEAM scholarship from the Hustlers Guild.  The Hustlers Guild will award two students with $1,000 scholarships who plan to pursue certifications or degrees in STEAM-based programs at two or four year institutions, or seed investment for STEAM-based startups. Students graduating this spring with a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply.
